Job Description

SUMMARY:  Review customer needs and makes prototype programs, purchase/maintain tooling.  Develops production programs (sheet metal laser and punch/laser combo) for custom and semi-custom products with engineering input by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Consults with engineers and other personnel regarding product information such as design, capacity and propose, and types of material to be used to fabricate product to determine feasibility of product proposal.
  • Analyzes written specifications, drawings, rough sketches and verbal instructions to plan layout and determine sequence of operations. 
  • Coordinates and programs prototype parts through the Metal Fabrication and Proto departments in cooperation with the managers of each department. Evaluates experimental procedures and recommends changes or modification for efficiency and adaptability to production.
  • Analyzes and inspects to determine that design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Confers with engineering personnel and prepares design modifications as required.  Confers with manufacturing and engineering on tooling and programming of production phase.
  • Will program new designs from 3-dimensional computer models.  Will use computer assisted design and manufacturing software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks. 
  • Review and program all sheet metal requirements including Product Releases, ECO's and prototyping.  Contacts the engineer if there are any discrepancies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Manufacturing operations
  • Ability to troubleshoot programming and production problems.
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to apply concepts of algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume
  • Ability to deal with problems involving many variables in fluid situations.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  High School degree or GED.  Experience in sheet metal fabrication (5 years minimum).  Basic Windows-based computing experience required.  Experience in sheet metal programming preferred.  Experience communicating with customers to assist in the design and production of surgical containers preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

EQUIPMENT USED:  NC Punch/Laser combination machines, NC ‘flying optics’ Laser machines, various secondary sheet metal processes, CAD/CAM technologies and Windows-based computers, as well as various measuring instruments.
