Job Description


The position requires the set up employee to produce a quality product per print as assigned with little supervision in the most efficient method possible.  The employee will conduct basic troubleshooting when needed and must rely on experience and judgment to accomplish goals with above average degree of independence and initiative to complete job requirements in accordance with the production timeline. The employee will create a statement of standard work detailing the appropriate steps including pictures that detail the set-up so others can follow the workflow.


  • Sets-up assigned equipment to produce quality products per print so the machine center can be handed off to a production operator.
  • Gathers appropriate gaging, tooling, fixturing, jaws and /or collets.
  • Uses appropriate work holding and follows the process & set up developed by program engineering.
  • Sets tooling in holders & loads tooling into machine tool and touches off tools.
  • Sets and adjusts bar feeder with appropriate bushing to hold raw material; changes pusher collet; sets part length; and adjusts bar guides.
  • Picks up work coordinates
  • Runs and inspects first part, verifies dimensions and makes necessary adjustments when needed.
  • Inspects product and documents first article and in process inspection data as required.
  • Once completed, verifies set up is stable and producing good parts.
  • Brings major problems involving tooling, programming, work holding, or process to the Team Lead’s attention so additional support can be provided by Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Notifies Team Lead immediately when the routed set up time or run time cannot be achieved.
  • Initiates machine adjustments to ensure quality product.
  • Performs additional operations per supervisor direction.
  • Follows good documentation practices
  • Organizes and keeps work area clean.


  • Has a basic understanding of programming languages and G-code systems.
  • Able to perform general math calculations.
  • Able to read and interpret drawings.
  • Able to use inspection equipment (comparator, micrometer, and caliper).
  • Able to navigate PL Controller (ex. Fanuc, Mazatrol, Haas, other).
  • Able to complete task in a timely fashion.
  • Detailed oriented with large emphasis on accuracy.
  • Able to Multi-task.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year minimum CNC Swiss set up experience preferred, or 2 years as an operator in Milling, Turning or Swiss.
  • Two years minimum general machine shop experience preferred.


CNC Machines, Calipers, Micrometers, Indicators, Wrenches.

It also involves reaching and using hands and fingers to operate measuring instruments and machinery. Occasionally requires lifting of up to 50 pounds (under 1/3 of the time). Must have adequate dexterity with hands and able to work in small areas.


The operator must be able to read small print (6-12 inch font with or without vision aides). The operator is occasionally required to view items at 20 inches or less, with or without vision aides.
