Job Description

 The New Product Development (NPD) Engineering Co-op will work under direct supervision/guidance of a development engineer to create and test new product designs and formulate manufacturing specifications.  Together they will innovate new medical instruments from conception to launch.  With a cross functional team, the NPD intern will document the surgical user needs and translate the needs into design inputs.  The team will create designs according to the design inputs, verify and validate the user needs in a simulated clinical setting.  This is accomplished by maintaining Symmetry Medical’s principles of Safety, Quality, Customer Satisfaction and Innovations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Complete basic design control documentation to be included in a product design history file including:
    • Writing and/or verifying user needs and product specifications
    • Verification and testing processes
    • Raw materials and product
    • Risk mitigation
    • Validation activities
    • Work with cross-functional groups to assess and implement design for manufacturability and inspection requirements.
    • Create 3D parameterized models, and complete engineering drawings using Unigraphics and SolidWorks.
    • Identify and critically analyze functional relationships between mating components in a product/device.
    • Document and justify changes made to product features across several print and model revisions.
    • Assist cross-functional teams with developing part GD&T to optimize fit, form and function of new and existing products.
    • Document, initiate and lead engineering change notices with cross functional team.
  • Additional functions and requirements may be assigned by manager/s as deemed appropriate.
    • Support Lean initiatives in day to day engineering processes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  •  Ability to create, read, and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Machining and materials background a plus.
  •  Unigraphics/SolidWorks a plus.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Must be organized, detail oriented, self-motivated. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be customer service focused.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING EQUIPMENT AND MACHINE COMPETENCIES:

  • In pursuit of a  B.S. in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering
  • Minimum GPA: 3.2/4.0
